Chapter 17

When Jenna woke the next morning the sun approached its highest point in the sky. Peter called to her through their mind-link, and she dressed as quickly as possible before meeting him downstairs.

“There you are!” Peter said, as she reached the ground floor.

“Sorry,” she replied. “It was a long night.” She had extreme trouble falling asleep thinking about everything Dominic had said and done.

“It’s all right. I have good news.” He threw her a leather pouch. “Lady Becca made good on her bet.”

“Aurelia gave you the winnings?”

“She said you did the work, so you deserved it.”

“I didn’t do anything.”

“Listen,” said Peter. “Everyone relies on family and friends. It’s all part of the game.”

“Fine,” she said, “I’ll put it in my room for safekeeping, then I need to leave or Nasiri will try to kill me again.”

“Of course.”

About an hour later, Jenna hurried toward the indoor knight training facilities, doing her best not to slip on the ice that forced everyone inside.

Nasiri sniffled as Jenna strode through the door. “You’re late.”

“I am not, but are you all right? You sound…” She struggled to think of the right Rahtani word, but gave up. “Bad.”

“Summon your bow.”

She did as instructed and loosed a few arrows at an indoor target, as Nasiri directed her movement. “A-choo!” Nasiri’s sneeze distracted her, and the arrow went wide.

“Sorry, but are you sure you should be doing this, Nasiri. You don’t sound well.”

“Blasted Sevalians and their cold weather sicknesses.” She sneezed again twice.

“You know the healers have herbal tea that will help you sleep.”

“I need no tea. I’m fine.”

“Are you?”

Nasiri narrowed her eyes and loosed an arrow. She frowned as it hit the edge of the target. She drew back another, but it only hit the edge on the other side. She wiped her nose. “All right, but keep practicing. I’ll be back within the week.”

“Of course I’ll still practice. Just go get some rest.”

She narrowed her eyes at Jenna again as she marched off, sneezing once more as she exited. Once Nasiri was safely out of sight, Jenna grinned.

That afternoon she visited the infirmary and found Verne organizing a medicine cabinet in the store room. He was inventorying everything to determine what needed restocking. “Hello, Jenna,” he said. “I wasn’t expecting you today.”

“I just had some free time and thought I’d stop by.”

Verne smirked. “Your instructor came by today, suffering from a nasty head cold. Is that the reason for your newfound free time?”

Jenna failed to meet her friend’s gaze. “Maybe.”

“I gave her a tonic that should help her sleep well for a few days, so enjoy it while it lasts,” Verne added, still smiling.

“Jenna, what are you doing here?” Jenna turned to see Prince Dominic standing next to Logan, the Tower mage. They stared at her as she stood in the storeroom doorway.

“I just wanted to talk to Verne, sir,” she replied. “I can leave if I’m bothering anyone.”

The Prince frowned at her. “I should remind you this is a place for healing and not gossip,” said the Prince.
